Everything Just Happens
Exhibit Dates: October 8 — November 5, 2016
Artist Reception on Saturday, October 8, 6-9PM
LAFAYETTE, CA (Sept. 2016) The Jennifer Perlmutter Gallery is proud to present Everything Just Happens. A solo exhibition of abstract paintings by Adam Shaw. This work is preoccupied with the question of what anything means — what we believe, why we believe it, what the world is, what the self is. Shaw’s work is an investigation that moves from a central awareness in several simultaneously explored directions. The exhibit runs from October 8 through November 5, 2016 with a reception for the artist on Saturday October 8th from 6-9PM
Adam Shaw’s heavily textured abstract paintings draw in the viewer with the depth and richness of the paint. The artist’s use of marks, language and abstraction ensnare one’s imagination and invite deeper exploration, and discovery of new universes with every examination of the surface. The paintings are metaphor and no surprise with Adam’s love for poetry and philosophy. The works presented are inspired by landscape, flowers, trees, and language.
“The landscapes aren’t of any place, there are no trees or flowers that look like those depicted in the paintings, and I use language to provoke, to suggest, to question, rather than to describe.” — Adam Shaw
Adam Shaw was born in New York City. He has been painting his entire life, and began working with oils in the mid 1970’s. He was educated in the Renaissance tradition, receiving a B.A. in Classics, with a minor in Russian and Italian. In 1979 and 1980 he lived in Italy, in Florence and Urbino, studying art history. In 1981 he moved to San Francisco to pursue a Master’s degree in Poetics. Following that he became a physician and was in private practice for 14 years. He has taught workshops and lectured at numerous institutions, including Palmer College and the College of Marin. He has published a number of his own poems and has translated poetry from Latin, Russian and Italian. His work is in many corporate and private collections in the United States and Europe.
